Lapis Lazuli

It was used by ancient cultures for jewelry and amulets. Ancient Egyptians associated lapis lazuli with the night sky and gods.

What is it made up of?

• Lapis Lazuli is primarily made up of lazurite, calcite and pyrite.

Colour range:

• The colour range for lapis lazuli can range from light blue, greenish-blue, royal blue and also a deep violet-blue. The colour is determined by the mineral composition.

Mohs hardness scale:

• 5 to 6

Where is it found?

• It is primarily found in Chile and Afghanistan. However, other locations are known, although the quality of the stone is lesser. Those locations include, USA, Canada, Myanmar and Pakistan.

Lapis Lazuli meaning:

• Lapis Lazuli is associated with truth, inner peace, wisdom and self-expression. Also believed to help stimulate the third eye.
