Petrified Wood

Petrified wood is actually a fossil. The process of petrified wood becoming petrified wood can take millions of years to get to the end result. For the process to be successful the tree has to be quickly buried by sediment, for example; river mud or volcanic ash.

What is it made up of?

  • Petrified Wood forms when woody stems of plants are buried in wet sediments saturated with dissolved minerals. The lack of oxygen slows decay of the wood, allowing minerals to replace cell walls and to fill void spaces in the wood.

Colour range:

  • Petrified wood actually has a large range of colours. Depending on the colour of the petrified wood depends on the minerals it has mixed with.Please see below:
  • Blue, teal and green: It contains copper, cobalt or chromium.
  • Black: it contains carbon.
  • Orange and yellow: It contains manganese oxides.

Mohs hardness scale:

  • 6.5 to 7.

Where is it found?

  • It is found all over the world. For example: USA, Germany, China, United Kingdom, Australia, India and Argentina.

Petrified wood meaning:

  • It is often associated with fertility, abundance, and the life-giving power of the earth. Wood is also linked to the concepts of growth, expansion, and new beginnings.
