It is believed to have formed over 2 billion years ago from the combination of red jasper, tiger's eye and hematite. Well known for it unmistakable earthy tones and distinctive layers. Often used for jewellery and cravings.

What is it made up of?

• It is composed of alternating bands of red jasper, yellow limonite, black hematite and tiger's eye.

Colour range:

• Tiger iron colour ranges from brick red, black, golden yellow and metallic grey.

Mohs hardness scale:

• 6.5 to 7.

Where is it found?

• Tiger iron is a unique gemstone found only in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. It is mined from a Archaean formation (3000 million years) in the Ord Ranges, near Port Hedland in Western Australia.
